Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015
Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015
'Japanese Modern Architecture 1920-2015' uses a series of thematic lenses to explain the rich history of Japanese architectural developments from the 1920s foundation of modern architecture to contemporary permutations of modern and post-modern architecture. The book introduces the diversity of Japanese architecture and traces the evolution of Japanese architecture in the context of domestic and international developments. It examines the relationship between architecture and nature, and explores various approaches to craft and material. Finally, this new book considers tensions between refinement and ostentation in architectural expression. AUTHOR: Ari Seligmann has been engaged with Japanese architecture for over twenty-five years, as a designer, historian and critic. From working in Japan during the Bubble period to researching the Bunri-ha (1920-8) introduction of modern architecture, and from conducting comprehensive analyses of the Kumamoto Artpolis public architecture programme (1988- present) to curating exhibitions on Japanese architecture, he has developed keen insights into the development of architecture in Japan. Ari regularly lectures and publishes on the historiography and representations of Japanese architecture. He is currently developing a dynamic architecture programme as Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Architecture Department at Monash University. SELLING POINTS: Japan continues to be a rich source of inspiring architectural projects and ideas. This new book traces the development of Japanese modern architecture from 1920 to 2015. Will be of great interest to students of architecture, and anyone with an interest in Japanese post-war culture.
